HDB To Condo: How Long Does The Whole Process Actually Take?

One of the most common surprises for first-time upgraders is how long the whole process takes from start to finish. People assume a few months. The reality is closer to six to twelve months — and for new launches, potentially longer.

The Selling Side: 3–5 Months

Once you appoint an agent and market your HDB flat, the realistic timeline to completion of sale is three to five months. Marketing and viewings typically take two to six weeks. The Option exercise period is three weeks. The completion period is typically eight to ten weeks for resale HDB transactions.

The Buying Side: Varies By Property Type

For a resale private property, the buying side typically closes within two to three months of the offer being accepted. For a new launch, the timeline is fundamentally different — the development may not complete for two to four years. This means you'll need somewhere to live between selling your HDB and the new property being ready.

The Gap In Between

The trickiest part of the timeline is the gap between selling and buying. Understanding when you need to be out, when the new property is ready, and what bridging arrangements are needed — and budgeting for them — is part of the planning that gets done well before either transaction begins. A realistic all-in timeline for selling an HDB and buying a resale condo is six to nine months from start to keys. For a new launch, it's sell now, live somewhere for two to four years, then move in.
